Board games

My name is Ella, and I am the family dog of a blended family of 6. A blended family is when two families become one. In our family, Xavier, the oldest, is headed into his first year of College, while Jacob is starting his 11th year and Benjamin, his 10th in high school. The youngest, Nicholas, will be in grade 8th, which is his last year in middle school here. Back-to-School is just around the corner, and it can be exciting and a little stressful at the same time for the four boys. Here is how to get your children In the back-to-school spirit with board games.  Asmodee Canada has the best learning board games that offer enriching thrills for the entire family.

Board games have become a way for us to bond and spend quality time as a family. Asmodee is a well-known, highly respected, and one of our family’s favourite game publishers. They are one of the world’s leading game distributors. Last November, my Mom wrote her very first blog post with Asmodee Canada. She had no idea at that time these board games would bring our family closer than ever. Being a blended family, we have to find ways to create new traditions and get to know each other. My family has worked with them multiple times since then, and now we were hoping you could discover the best learning board games to alleviate the stress and get the kids excited about learning again.

Our Family Top Best Learning Board Games

Board game: Timeline Classic

  • Age: 8+
  • Players: 2 to 6
  • Time to play: ~25 minutes.

This game is very easy to bring anywhere. It comes with 55 small cards, a tin box and a rulebook. The game’s goal is to be the last player with no cards.

Players take turns attempting to place one of their cards into the correct position within a timeline of events. As the game progresses, putting your card in its proper position within the timeline becomes more challenging since the margin of error increases. For example, was the table knife’s invention before or after Champagne’s creation?

My family loves this game. It’s fun, and they all learn history at the same time. Jacob dislikes history, but he is very good at the game.

You can even combine other Timeline sets with any set to make this game even more challenging.

Board game: Spot it!

  • Age: 6+
  • Player: 2 to 8
  • Time to play:~15 minutes

There are five different ways to play Spot it! The game set has 55 cards; each contains eight symbols, a five games rules book and a large round tin can. No matter which mini-game you play, the goal is always to be the fastest player to spot the matching symbol displayed between 2 random cards and call it out.

It looks easy, but it can be challenging to spot the matching symbol and call it out simultaneously. My usually quiet Mom couldn’t call it out without yelling. It was pretty funny to watch.

Board game: Patchwork

  • Age: 8+
  • Players: 2
  • Time to play: ~30 minutes

Each player tries to create the best quilt with shape tiles. The goal is to buy their shape tiles with buttons, but they must carefully choose the right one to fit their quilt. Each tile gives some valuable points at the end of the game. The player who was able to score the most points wins.

Nicholas was delighted to play this one. It is an excellent game that enables us to learn strategies and introduces the abstract world. It is perfect for spending quality one-on-one time with each child.

Board game: Splendor

  • Age: 12+
  • Players: 2-4
  • Time to play: ~35 minutes

This game is Xavier, the oldest of the boys, favourite game. The goal of this game is to be the first to collect 15 points. To do this, you must become a wealthy merchant and turn your raw gems into beautiful jewels. This game needs more thinking and strategic planning to develop your gemstones. These gemstones are used to acquire the necessary points to win the game.
